Lawrence Central and Bloomington South each won four of 16 events, but in the end the depth of top-ranked LC was far too much for that of No. 3 Bloomington South at the Conference Indiana Championships held April 30 at Indiana University.
The Bears totaled 147 points to blast past South (91) for the title at the eight-team event featuring five of the state’s Top 25 boys track & field programs. Unranked Pike (84.5) edged out No. 12 Columbus North (83) for third place, with No. 10 Bloomington North (77) finishing fifth and No. 25 Franklin Central (68) sixth.
Lawrence Central earned victories in a pair of relays: the 4×100-meter relay in :41.63 and the 4×800 with an 8:07.89. The Bears also got wins from Jeron Brown (a :50.10 in leading teammate Michael Steele to a 1-2 finish in the 400) and Connor Claflin (1:56.00) in the 800.
Bloomington South took the 3,200 meters (Carl Smith in 9:36.38), as well as three field events – Gabe Hull with a double win in the shot put (60-7) and the discus throw (181-0), and the pole vault where Drew Volz went 15-0.
Pike had a pair of victors in Darnell Harris (a :11.13 in the 100) and the 4×400 relay (3:22.47). Columbus North earned one win when Thomas Brueggemann went :21.97 in the 200.
Bloomington North’s Max Tuttle was the meet’s other double winner in taking the 110 hurdles in :14.76 and the 300 hurdles (:38.22), while Dylan Anderson’s 22-8.5 won the long jump.
